St. Johnswort Massage Oil

Ingredients: Fresh, sustainably wild-crafted St. Johnswort, organic olive oil.

>> This traditional Mediterranean oil makes me feel like I am getting massaged by sunshine. Internally and externally, St. John’s wort is said to heal tissue damage of all kinds including cuts, scrapes, sprains, ulcers, bruises, second-day burns and sunburns, and sore, tired muscles. Internally it is taken as a tincture or tea for these purposes, and externally as an oil (or a wash or poultice). It is a common first aid remedy as well as just a fabulous, soothing massage oil.


St. Johnswort is one of the quintessential summer wildflowers and when it is infused in any substance, that substance takes on its sunshine. This particular oil sat under the hot sun and under the dark night sky on my dark street, amid the baby potted fruit trees in out “driveway orchard” until it was fully infused.

A bit more about St. Johnswort:

I love how folk herbalist Billie Potts introduces her reader to this plant: “St. Johnswort loves open waste places, poor soil, and sunny environments where it can grow tall, bushy, and rangy, until its brilliant flowering time when it bursts forth in crowns of yellow blossoms. In the fresh state, the entire plant is soothing, astringent, and healing. For thousands of years it was used to treat wounds, abrasions, hemorrhages, inflammations, and burns.” (from her book Witches Heal).

 

At this time, St. Johnswort is thought of primarily as an antidepressant. I’m not certain how this complex, multi-faceted plant became so pidgeonholed, but it did. In Maude Grieves’ A Modern Herbal, for instance, she lists off a great many of other internal uses: “All pulmonary complaints, bladder troubles, in suppression of urine, dysentery, worms, diarrhea, hysteria and nervous depression, hemoptysis and other hemorrhages and jaundice.”

 

I have a bunch of St. John’s wort macerating right now in half-gallon jars of alcohol and apple cider vinegar, respectively, that will be ready to press out and bottle for next month, but the infused olive oil is ready now, so…Enjoy!
